Dans la poursuite de son mandat d’encourager l’étude de l’histoire nautique par et sur les Canadiens, la Canadian Nautical Research Society / La société canadienne pour la recherche nautique présente une variété de prix annuels :

Il s’agit d’un prix occasionnel par lequel la Société reconnaît l’excellence des contributions à l’histoire maritime dans le large éventail de ces activités. Elle s’applique aux particuliers ou aux institutions telles que les musées, les archives ou les établissements d’enseignement. Il n’y a aucune valeur monétaire associée à ce prix.

W.A.B. ‘Alec’ Douglas est un marin-érudit d’envergure internationale. À la suite d’une carrière d’officier en mer dans la Marine royale du Canada, il a été directeur (1973-1993) puis directeur général (1993-94) du Departement de l’histoire, Quartier général de la Défense nationale (Canada). Il a été membre fondateur de la SCRN. Le changement du nom de ce prix, antérieurement « Prix du mérite de la SCRN » est tout à fait dans l’esprit de son leadership dans la promotion de l’histoire maritime canadienne dans notre patrimoine et à l’étranger.

Critères d’attribution :

1. La considération principale sera accordée aux individus et institutions canadiens.
2. Dans le cas d’expositions muséales, l’exposition peut être présentée à l’extérieur du pays, mais elle doit avoir une orientation maritime canadienne.
3. Les personnes, archives ou institutions étrangères qui contribuent à la préservation du patrimoine nautique canadien sont également éligibles pour ce prix.
4. Les prix individuels peuvent récompenser les contributions de toute une vie à la recherche nautique canadienne par des chercheurs ou des conservateurs canadiens ou étrangers.
5. Les membres de la SCRN, à l’exception des membres du Comité, peuvent se porter candidats pour ce prix.
6. Les candidatures doivent parvenir au Comité avant le 31 mars de l’année de présentation.

Termes de référence :

1. Le président du comité des prix sollicitera les candidatures pour le prix par le biais des publications de la société l’Argonauta et le Northern Mariner/Le Marin du Nord, ou sur le Web.
2. Les candidatures seront examinées par le Conseil avant la sélection finale.
3. Une fois sélectionnés, les candidats seront immédiatement informés de leur prix par le président du comité des prix.
4. L’annonce officielle du prix sera faite lors de l’AGA de la société.
5. Les frais encourus pour un certificat pour le prix seront autorisés par le trésorier.
6. Le président du comité des prix rendra compte des activités du comité au conseil, et aux membres de la société lors de l’AGA.

Gagnants du prix Alec Douglas pour les contributions à l’histoire maritime

2025: Paul Adamthwaite et Betty Ann Anderson pour leur rôle dans l’établissement de l’Archive navale marine la collection canadienne, leurs services à cette Société et leur direction de la Canadian Society of Marine Artists.

2021 : William Glover pour son rôle de rédacteur du journal de la Société, Northern Mariner/Le Marin Du Nord, pour deux mandats de cinq ans, de juillet 2001 à avril 2006 et de juillet 2015 à décembre 2020.

2020 : Isabel Campbell et Colleen McKee co-éditrices de l’Argonauta, le bulletin de la Société, du printemps 2010 au printemps 2020.

2002 : Lewis “Skip” Fischer, co-fondateur et rédacteur en chef de la revue Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, du premier numéro de janvier 1991 jusqu’en janvier 2001.

2002 : Olaf U. Janzen, co-fondateur et co-éditeur de la revue Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, et éditeur des revues de livres de 1991 à 2000.

Gerald E. ‘Gerry’ Panting était l’un des fondateurs de la SCRN et, en tant que membre de longue date du corps professoral de l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve (1959-1993), il a été le mentor de jeunes universitaires. Ce prix en son nom est une bourse d’un montant jusqu’à $1.000 CAN pour aider un nouveau chercheur dans le domaine de la recherche nautique à présenter un article (en anglais ou en français) à la conférence annuelle de la SCRN. La ou les personnes sélectionnées doivent être en début de carrière dans le domaine de la recherche maritime.

Critères d’attribution :

1. Un « nouvel érudit » est généralement défini comme une personne ayant moins de cinq ans d’expérience dans le domaine universitaire, en particulier dans les études maritimes. 
2. Pour être éligibles au prix, les nouveaux érudits peuvent être des étudiants canadiens dans une universités canadienne ou étrangère travaillant dans le domaine des études maritimes, ou des chercheurs d’autres pays travaillant sur des sujets maritimes canadiens. 
3. L’objet de la bourse est d’aider à assister la préesence en personne à la conférence annuelle de la Société.
4. Le comité des prix prendra en compte le mérite des candidatures reçues, les travaux antérieurs des candidats ainsi que leur article proposé, et le niveau de besoin d’aide financière. 
5. Les membres de la SCRN, en dehors des membres du Comité des Prix, peuvent se porter candidats pour ce prix.
6. Les candidatures doivent être faites en même temps que la soumission de la proposition de communication à la conférence, avec la date limite spécifiée dans l’appel à communications.

1. Le comité d’organisation de la conférence s’assurera que l’annonce de la conférence, l’appel à communications et toutes les références à la conférence mentionnent le prix Gerry Panting pour les nouveaux chercheurs. 
2. Les candidatures pour le prix Gerry Panting pour les nouveaux érudits sont examinées par le Conseil avant la notification de sélection finale. 
3. Une fois sélectionnés, les candidats seront immédiatement informés de leur prix par le président du comité des prix. 
4. Le récipiendaire sera annoncé dans l’Argonauta et identifié dans The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord, si son article est publié. 
5. L’annonce officielle du récipiendaire sera faite lors de l’AGA de la société. 
6. Les frais engagés pour le prix Gerry Panting pour les nouveaux érudits seront autorisés par le trésorier. 
7. Les membres du comité des prix ne sont pas éligibles pour le prix pendant leur mandat.

Le Prix James Pritchard pour un article par un étudiant a été lancé en 2021 pour être décerné chaque année à la meilleure contribution écrite par un étudiant et publiée dans The Northern Mariner/Le marin du nord. Le gagnant recevra un prix de $300. 

James Pritchard, professeur émérite de l’Université Queen’s, a été président de la Société de 2002 à 2005 et était très apprécié en tant qu’historien maritime de la marine française, de la construction navale canadienne, et en tant que mentor de jeunes universitaires.

Critères d’attribution :

1. Les articles considérés pour ce prix doivent avoir été publiés dans le journal de la société dans l’année pour laquelle ils sont jugés. 
2. Pour être admissible au prix, un étudiant doit être inscrit dans un établissement d’enseignement canadien au moment de la soumission pour publication de l’article.
3. Si aucun article ne répond aux critères d’éligibilité ou n’est jugé digne d’un prix au cours d’une année donnée, aucun prix ne sera décerné. 

Termes de référence :

1. Une fois que les membres du comité ont examiné les soumissions et sont parvenus à un consensus, le président du comité des prix informera l’auteur retenu de la décision.
2. L’annonce officielle du Prix James Pritchard pour un article par un étudiant est faite lors de l’AGA de la société.
3. Les prix en espèces et les autres coûts liés au prix James Pritchard pour un article par un étudiant seront autorisés par le trésorier. 
4. Le président du comité des prix rendra compte des activités du comité au conseil et aux membres de la société lors de l’AGA.

2023 : David Niddam-Dent, “’The Best VR in the Whole Flaming Navy’: The Life and Career of Lieutenant Commander Clifton R. ‘Tony’ Coughlin” The Northern Mariner/ Le marin du nord 32.2 (Summer/ Été 2022), 129-174.

Dans le but d’encourager les études supérieures au niveau de la maîtrise dans les universités canadiennes et autres instituts d’enseignement supérieur, la Société décerne annuellement un prix à une thèse de haut niveau. Le gagnant recevra un prix de $500.

Le prix porte le nom de Jacques Cartier, navigateur Malouin, maître marin et explorateur français, qui a voyagé dans le golfe et le fleuve Saint-Laurent qu’il a baptisé, et en trois voyages a retracé les détails d’une entrée navigable au cœur d’un continent. Les thèses (y compris les projets de recherche de maîtrise / MRP, les articles apparentés ou les articles de recherche étendus) qui démontrent des approches interdisciplinaires au-delà de l’histoire et des arts sont encouragées.

Critères d’attribution :

1. Les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiens ou résidents permanents fréquentant une université ou un établissement d’enseignement supérieur canadien ou un établissement étranger similaire, écrivant sur un sujet maritime canadien. 
2. La thèse (y compris les projets de recherche de maîtrise / MRP, les articles apparentés ou les articles de recherche étendus) doit avoir été complétée avec succès et évaluée, menant à la réussite du diplôme au cours de l’année civile précédente (c’est-à-dire, achèvement en 2020 pour le prix décerné en 2021). 
3. La thèse soumise doit démontrer une recherche originale d’un ordre étendu et compter au moins 50 pages / 12 500 mots.
4. Une copie PDF de la thèse doit être soumise au président du comité des prix avant le 31 mars de l’année au cours de laquelle le prix doit être décerné.
5. Les candidats doivent fournir une lettre d’accompagnement comprenant une brève biographie (200 mots), ainsi qu’une adresse postale, un numéro de téléphone et une adresse e-mail. De plus, une lettre du superviseur ou du chef de département du candidat à l’université ou à l’institut dans lequel la thèse est soumise doit confirmer que le travail a réussi l’examen (notant les dates de soumission et d’examen et / ou d’obtention du diplôme).
6. Les thèses doivent avoir une dimension maritime. Les domaines de recherche comprennent, sans toutefois s’y limiter, l’histoire, l’histoire des sciences et de la technologie, les études politiques et d’économie politique, la littérature, l’archéologie, l’archéologie sous-marine, l’anthropologie, la géographie, la sociologie, l’écologie et toute autre branche d’apprentissage historique liée à l’usage humain des mers, des océans, des rivières ou des lacs.
7. Si aucune thèse n’est jugée digne du prix au cours d’une année donnée, aucun prix ne sera décerné.
8. Les candidatures doivent parvenir au Comité avant le 31 mars de l’année de présentation.

1. Les étudiants éligibles se nomment généralement eux-mêmes. Les facultés peuvent également soumettre des thèses qu’elles jugent dignes d’être examinées. De plus, et de la part du comité, le président du comité des prix peut communiquer avec les facultés d’enseignement pour solliciter des thèses à examiner par les membres. 
2. Une fois que les membres du comité ont examiné les soumissions et sont parvenus à un consensus, le président du comité des prix informe le candidat retenu de la décision. 
3. L’annonce officielle du Prix Jacques Cartier est faite lors de l’AGA de la Société. 
4. Le Président du Comité des Prix s’assure que les lauréats reçoivent une attestation signée par le Président de la SCRN et l’un des juges du Prix Jacques Cartier. Lorsque plus d’une thèse est digne de mention, un certificat de mention honorable peut être décerné. 
5. Les prix monétaires et autres frais liés au Prix Jacques Cartier seront autorisés par le trésorier. 
6. Le président du comité des prix rendra compte au conseil des activités du comité et aux membres de la société lors de l’AGA.

5. Les livres et les articles doivent être axés sur la mer et peuvent inclure des ouvrages d’histoire, de géographie, de sociologie, d’anthropologie ou d’autres disciplines.
6. Les auteurs ou les membres de la SCRN peuvent autonominer des livres; tous les articles (et uniquement les articles) publiés dans la revue de la Société seront pris en compte. 
7. Si aucun livre ou article n’est jugé digne d’un prix au cours d’une année donnée, aucun prix n’est décerné.
8. Les soumissions de livres doivent parvenir au Comité avant le 31 mars de l’année de présentation.

1. Les maisons d’édition généralement soumettent des livres qu’ils jugent dignes d’être évalués. Le président du comité des prix peut également contacter les éditeurs pour solliciter des livres à évaluer par les membres. 
2. Tous les articles complets basés sur des recherches originales et publiés dans la revue de la Société sont éligibles ; normalement, les notes de recherche, les commentaires et les essais critiques ne sont pas pris en compte.
3. Lorsque plus d’un article ou livre mérite d’être noté, une mention honorable ou une reconnaissance spéciale peut être décernée.
4. Une fois que les membres du comité des prix ont examiné les soumissions et sont parvenus à un consensus, le président du comité des prix informera les auteurs retenus et leurs éditeurs de la décision. 
5. L’annonce officielle des prix Matthews est faite lors de l’AGA de la Société. 
6. Le président du comité des prix s’assure que les lauréats des deux catégories reçoivent un certificat signé par le président du CNRS et le président du comité des prix Matthews.

2. Les livres et articles doivent être écrits ou édités par un auteur canadien, ou porter sur un sujet maritime canadien. 
3. Les livres ne doivent pas nécessairement être publiés par une maison d’édition canadienne.
4. Les articles doivent avoir été publiés dans le journal de la Société. 
5. Les livres et les articles doivent être axés sur la mer et peuvent inclure des ouvrages d’histoire, de géographie, de sociologie, d’anthropologie ou d’autres disciplines.
6. Les auteurs ou les membres de la SCRN peuvent autonominer des livres; tous les articles (et uniquement les articles) publiés dans la revue de la Société seront pris en compte. 
7. Si aucun livre ou article n’est jugé digne d’un prix au cours d’une année donnée, aucun prix n’est décerné.
8. Les soumissions de livres doivent parvenir au Comité avant le 31 mars de l’année de présentation.

Termes de référence :

1. Les maisons d’édition généralement soumettent des livres qu’ils jugent dignes d’être évalués. Le président du comité des prix peut également contacter les éditeurs pour solliciter des livres à évaluer par les membres. 
2. Tous les articles complets basés sur des recherches originales et publiés dans la revue de la Société sont éligibles ; normalement, les notes de recherche, les commentaires et les essais critiques ne sont pas pris en compte.
3. Lorsque plus d’un article ou livre mérite d’être noté, une mention honorable ou une reconnaissance spéciale peut être décernée.
4. Une fois que les membres du comité des prix ont examiné les soumissions et sont parvenus à un consensus, le président du comité des prix informera les auteurs retenus et leurs éditeurs de la décision. 
5. L’annonce officielle des prix Matthews est faite lors de l’AGA de la Société. 
6. Le président du comité des prix s’assure que les lauréats des deux catégories reçoivent un certificat signé par le président du CNRS et le président du comité des prix Matthews. 
7. Les coûts liés aux prix Matthews seront autorisés par le trésorier. 
8. Le président du comité des prix rendra compte au conseil des activités du comité et aux membres de la Société lors de l’AGA.

Argonauta est une publication trimestrielle de la Société (ISSN 2291-5427). Elle sert de bulletin d’informations, et de venue pour des articles moins formels que ceux qui paraissent dans Le marin du nord. Les contributions peuvent être envoyées aux éditeurs Ambjörn Adomeit et Richard Goette.

C’est également le meilleur endroit pour les questions et les petites notes de recherche; par exemple:

Lle bulletin d’information dresse un tableau de la croissance de la SCRN, mais elle révèle également une mine d’informations sur la recherche nautique au Canada dans les années 1980 et au-delà. Au cours de ses premières années, Argonauta a publié de nombreuses informations de recherche sous forme de notes, de requêtes et de courts articles – dont certains étaient destinés à réapparaître sous des formes ultérieures sous forme de livres ou d’articles dans Le marin du nord et d’autres revues.

Depuis presque le premier numéro d’Argonauta, l’inclusion de critiques de livres par des adhérants de la SCRN et d’autres a été reconnue comme ayant une valeur pour l’ensemble de la communauté des chercheurs. Les examens faisaient partie de la discussion entre les adhérants sur le rôle de l’organisation et la nécessité de trouver un équilibre entre ceux qui ont des intérêts académiques et ceux qui ont des intérêts non professionnels – non pas que ces descripteurs soient mutuellement exclusifs. La section des critiques de livres a séduit tout le monde.

La section critique de livres est actuellement l’un des points forts du Marin du nord – cette section a déménagé lorsque la SCRN a commencé sa publication académique en 1990 – mais, en réalité, elle n’était que la continuation de la forte caractéristique initialement établi dans Argonauta. En effet, entre 1984 et 1989, le bulletin a publié près de 160 critiques de livres. La portée de ces examens était large, et cela se poursuit dans la politique d’examen actuelle du Marin du nord; il couvre tout, des tomes académiques formels à la littérature plus populaire sur des sujets nautiques. De plus, bon nombre des critiques d’Argonauta ont été rédigées par ceux qui étaient – ​​ou allaient devenir – les chefs de file de la recherche nautique canadienne et internationale. La liste des examinateurs d’Argo est un who’s who du monde de la recherche maritime, et les textes examinés dans le bulletin au cours de ces premières années sont devenus, dans de nombreux cas, les références standard dans le domaine.

Alors que les critiques du Marin du nord sont accessibles grâce à l’indexation continue et à l’accès, en texte intégral, aux numéros en ligne, les riches critiques d’Argonauta nécessitaient auparavant l’accès à des copies papier du bulletin, tenues par peu de bibiotèques. Même maintenant, bien que les copies complètes soient disponibles en ligne, elles restent dans un format difficile à rechercher et la plupart des accès se font toujours par navigation web.
