La Société canadienne pour la recherche nautique a été fondée lors d’une réunion à l’Université d’Ottawa le 10 juin 1982. Professor Keith Matthews de la Memorial University of Newfoundland présidait, et était élu notre premier président. Il est mort début 1984. Le 25 octobre 1984 la Société a été incorporée sous statut fédéral sous le nom de Canadian Nautical Research Society – Société canadienne pour la recherche nautique.
